FAQ

Thank you so much for supporting our tea company. We are so glad you are here. Hopefully this will answer some of your questions. If you have a question not answered here, please feel free to send us an email to hello@flyingbirdbotanicals.com or contact us through our contact page.

What makes Flying Bird Botanicals unique?

We are a very small tea company truly passionate about what we do. We love tea and drink a lot of it! Our blends are crafted from teas and herbs sourced as directly as possible looking first to farmers here in the USA. All of our recipes are original and unique offering herbal formulas made by people who love and use herbs themselves for wellness. We strive to be a source of beauty in the world working hard to develop relationships with growers and always prioritizing community and quality over profit.

What teas make great iced tea?

While we love all of our teas iced, there are definitely a few that really shine when brewed up as iced tea. For non caffeinated options, we love Old Town Berry, Lavender Orange Red, Peace of Mind and Farm & Forest. For caffeinated options, the simplicity of Ancient Sunrise is amazing. We also love Vanilla Rose Ceylon, White Lemon Ginger and Lemon Mint Maté.

How many servings do I get from a loose leaf tin?

Each tin holds about 2oz. A general rule of thumb is that each ounce of tea by weight makes a gallon of brewed tea. By this formula, you get about 32 8oz cups.

How long will my tea last after I purchase it?

Our herbs and teas are sourced as directly as possible so they arrive to us fresh and vibrant. We use a beautiful, recycled steel airtight tin made in the USA to keep the tea super fresh once it leaves our shop. We can safely say that your tea will be good for at least two years and most likely longer.

Are you certified organic?

Yes! We are certified through the WSDA and the USDA

What are your tea bags made out of?

Our teabags are made out of a silken, plant based fabric that allows the beauty of the whole herbs and teas to shine. The fabric is certified biodegradable and compostable in a high heat, commercial quality composting systems. They are not made of petroleum based nylon or plastic and unlike those materials, our teabags will not leach micro plastics into your tea. We care about our community and want to provide you and yours a safe cup!

Want more specifics? The plant-based material is called polylactic acid (PLA). PLA is an inert, DNA-free material that is produced by breaking down plant starches. Through the process, no plant DNA is left behind, making the fabric allergen-free. PLA will not leak harmful plasticizers or micro plastics into your tea. There are no glues or staples in our teabags. The PLA mesh is sealed using ultrasonic vibrational energy.

Many bloggers and health advocates have made statements about plastic teabags. They reported their findings on the assumption that all silky tea bags contain petroleum-based plastic or nylon. Several data reports show that the common petroleum-based nylon and polyester silky tea bags on the market do in fact leach harmful plastics into the tea and are unsafe. We want to acknowledge that these are valid findings and appreciate the work people are doing to keep us all safe. However it is important to differentiate our plant based PLA tea bag fabric from petroleum based materials. PLA is a different material and is not petroleum based. PLA tea bags should not be linked to these reports or tests of unrelated materials.

Our PLA fabric was tested using Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) which allows a lab to test the fabric in it's entirety for harmful phthalates. None were detected, not even in trace amounts. PLA goes well beyond the conditions required to comply with USCPSC safety standards. Lab tests show it is BPA-free and phthalate-free ensuring PLA as a safe option, free of harmful plasticizers. This is great news and offers much needed peace of mind.
